Life Science and Health Care

The life science and health care industries are emerging sectors in Pearland as a result of major commitments by regional health care organizations and the location of the largest recruited life science company in the Houston region, Cardiovascular Systems Inc. (CSI).

A Booming New Center for Life Sciences
The Houston region is the flourishing new locale for the life sciences, primarily due to the influence of the Texas Medical Center (TMC), which is the world’s largest medical complex.

The Texas Medical Center
Specializing in cardiovascular research and treatment (Debakey Institute) as well as oncology (M.D. Anderson), the TMC has garnered global recognition for its research contributions. Complementing this research base is a complex assortment of regional hospitals and treatment facilities capable of treating any condition. It is the combination of both research and treatment that make the TMC unique.

Pearland is located just minutes from the TMC and its 50 medical institutions, placing Pearland in a strategic position to attract research, treatment and health care support facilities. The two zip codes with the highest concentration of TMC employees are both located in Pearland.

Benefits for life sciences and health care companies in the Pearland region include:

  • Access to Talent:  Currently 12% of the Pearland residents work in the health care sector.
  • Location:  Pearland’s location at the intersection of State Highway 288 and Beltway 8 has made the community a strategic choice for health care providers looking to serve our rapidly growing market.
  • Industry Growth:  Kelsey Seybold, Memorial Hermann and Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) have purchased large tracts of land for expansion in Pearland.

Life Science Growth in Pearland
The community has also been successful in attracting the Saint Paul, Minnesota-based cardiovascular medical device developer Cardiovascular Systems, Inc.  Manufacturing in their new state-of-the-art facility began in Fall 2010 and plans for the new site include a total of 250 high-skill life science jobs. CSI manufactures commercialized interventional treatment systems for vascular disease.
