Pearland approves Lonza Houston, Inc. for State-of-the-Art Biotech Facility
Leading supplier for pharmaceutical and biotech industries intends to build large facility in Pearland’s Lower Kirby District

PEARLAND, Texas — Leadership from the City of Pearland and the Pearland Economic Development Corporation (PEDC) are pleased to announce the recruitment of Lonza Houston, Inc. (Lonza) to Pearland.  Lonza intends to construct a large biotech facility for viral and immunotherapy development and manufacturing in Pearland’s Lower Kirby District.

Lonza is a global leader in the field of viral and cell therapy manufacturing, creating products that support safer and healthier living.  As a leading supplier for the pharmaceutical, biotech and special ingredient markets, Lonza’s products and services range from active pharmaceutical ingredients and stem-cell therapies to drinking water sanitizers.

“Lonza is the latest in a string of medical and life science employers to choose to locate in Pearland, following on the heels of Cardiovascular Systems, Inc., Merit Medical Systems, Base Pair Biotechnologies and Kelsey-Seybold,” said Pearland Mayor Tom Reid. “It has been a long-standing goal of the City to cultivate a broad spectrum of medical and life science related organizations in our community; Lonza’s interest in Pearland is a testament to our efforts and willingness to work with businesses interested in investing in our city.”

The state-of-the-art facility will house office space, process development, and quality control laboratories and a fully segregated fill/finish suite, allowing Lonza to more than double its current capacity for the production of viral gene and virally-modified therapeutics. The planned facility will also contain independent modular cleanrooms for up to 2,000 L-scale production in single-use bioreactors, along with cleanrooms designed to meet the requirements for the manufacture of cell therapy products for use in European markets.

The PEDC and city officials began working with Lonza in late 2014 on the project, which is intended to be completed by the third quarter of 2017. The facility will be located on an 11-acre site on Kirby Drive and will initially be home to over 50 employees with expected growth beyond that to include administrative, manufacturing, process development and quality assurance personnel.

“Lonza Houston is thrilled to have received Pearland’s approval to relocate and expand our manufacturing capabilities to the City of Pearland.  The expansion will allow us to address the growing need for cell and gene therapy manufacturing capacity to help find treatments and potential cures for different disease indications.  Pearland’s proximity to the Texas Medical Center and the continued growth of Pearland is appealing to Lonza.” said Ricardo Jimenez, Lonza Houston’s Site Director.

The Lower Kirby District consists of 1,200 acres located on the western border of Pearland facing South Beltway 8 and is well positioned to capture a significant portion of office, retail, commercial and industrial projects as the Houston market continues to grow and expand. Existing developments within the Lower Kirby Urban District include Merit Medical’s R&D and manufacturing facility, Dover Energy’s regional manufacturing and operations center, Cardiovascular Systems, Inc.’s medical device manufacturing facility, Pearland Surgery Center and Bass Pro Shop.
