Abbott, formerly Cardiovascular Systems, Inc. (CSI), a leading medical device manufacturer of innovative, interventional treatment systems for vascular disease, selected Pearland as the home of its second manufacturing facility in the United States in 2009 after a two-year recruitment process by PEDC. Abbot manufactures a minimally invasive medical device that treats peripheral arterial disease and further prevents amputations of the leg.

Through strategic partnerships and resourceful incentives, the PEDC was instrumental in bringing this biotech target to the city. As part of the recruitment package, PEDC acquired the land, constructed the 46,000-square-foot manufacturing facility and leased it back to Abbott for a 10-year term. In addition, PEDC also provided incentives for the project and assisted Abbott in securing a job creation grant from the Texas Enterprise Fund.

Not only did the recruitment of Abbott bring $10 million in capital investment to Pearland, as the first primary employer in Lower Kirby, but the recruitment of the Abbott facility to Pearland was also instrumental in setting the tone for the development of the Lower Kirby District, paving the way for many additional employers in the coming years.
