City of Pearland Partners with the National League of Cities and Department of Labor to Create New Jobs

Pearland, Texas — The City of Pearland and Pearland Economic Development Corporation (PEDC) is proud to join a new peer-learning cohort led by the National League of Cities (NLC) and the Department of Labor (DOL) to accelerate city efforts to design, develop, and launch a workforce initiative to build pathways into good jobs. The Good Jobs, Great Cities Learning Network will work with municipalities to spur innovative and scalable city-supported solutions that upskill and reskill workers into quality, high-demand jobs in infrastructure, clean energy, and advanced manufacturing jobs made possible by investments from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), the CHIPS and Science Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

“Pearland wants to be proactive in developing a high caliber regional workforce that can meet the needs of the in-demand jobs that are being created in our region,” stated Pearland Mayor Kevin Cole. “This program will be another asset to our workforce efforts.”

The city has made a concerted effort to attract major life sciences, medical device manufacturing and biotechnology companies to the area, but the success of these businesses depends on the availability of a skilled workforce. The City of Pearland, Pearland Chamber of Commerce, and PEDC, along with local partners in economic development, education, and industry, adopted the Pearland Prosperity Community Strategic Plan which has designated workforce and talent as a focus area. The city and its partners recognized the need for a structured workforce strategic plan to steer the direction of the region’s workforce initiatives and continue to invest in several workforce development programs and partnerships.

Through its participation in the Good Jobs, Great Cities Learning Network, the City of Pearland and PEDC will focus on developing the talent pipelines necessary to serve the industry that is already in the region and to position itself as destination for other life sciences and biomanufacturing companies. With its leadership focused on creating opportunities and building collaboration, these efforts will ensure that the City’s workforce is equipped with the skills needed to succeed in the 21st-century economy.

Pearland is joined by 17 other cities in the Good Jobs, Great Cities Learning Network. The program will run through 2024.
